On 2 March 2017, CENN together with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection, Parliament of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Adjara A/R Government in Batumi held a conference on Prospects of Developing Adjara’s Coastal Zone in the context of Climate Change.
The following key issues were discussed at the conference: intensified coastal erosion and retreat of the shoreline in Adjara under average long-term sea level rise due to global warming; evaluating the vulnerability of facilities and infrastructure serving various purposes located within coastal areas; and the evolution of coastal morphodynamics for upcoming decades. Presentations on climate change scenarios in Adjara coastal zone and on the sustainability of coastal recreational resources were also presented at the conference in terms of potential increase of sea level expected in the 21st century.
The aim of the conference was to introduce stakeholders to coastal zone problems related to global warming and unsustainable use of natural resources, and ways to address and mitigate the challenges.
Conference was held on 2 March 2017 in Hotel Sheraton, Batumi. The conference was organized within the following CENN’s ongoing programs:
Promoting Environmental and Social Accountability in the Mining Sector in the Caucasus with the financial support of German Fund Bread for the World (BftW) and Empowering Modern Research Practices of the Regional Agriculture-Related Institutions, in partnership with the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) and PMC Research Center.
