A globally accepted term, WASH stands for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Each of these components is interdependent, therefore, they are grouped together to represent a growing sector where each is dependent on the presence of the other. A good example would be a dysfunctional/absent toilet that could lead to water contamination, rendering hygienic practices impossible/difficult to carry out.
So why do we need WASH? Due to the fact that almost 1.1 billion people around the globe do not have access to safe water and 2.4 billion experience inadequate sanitation. It is a pivotal step to bring water, sanitation and hygiene to the poor to overcome poverty and restore human dignity.
To add more, over 200 million school age children are infected with parasites and flukes. Deceases related to water and sanitation can have severe results such as physical and mental underdevelopment, decrease in children’s learning capacity.
