On March 28 at 16:00 PM, the first ever waste separation corner opened in Metro City in Batumi. From this point forward, Metro City consumers, staff and Batumi residents, in general, will have the opportunity to bring and deposit separated waste into the appropriate waste-bins: paper, glass, plastic, and aluminium. Waste will be collected, transported and delivered to recycling companies by Sever Ltd., a waste collection company.
Metro City Director, Raul Kakhadze, Deputy Mayor of Batumi, Lela Surmanidze, USAID Economic Growth Office Director, Veronica Lee, and WMTR II Program Chief of Party, Nino Shavgulidze opened the waste separation corner.
The waste separation corner was launched by the Waste Management Technology in Regions, Phase II (WMTR II) program, implemented with the support of USAID. The program assists the Government of Georgia in modernizing the waste management sector in the country and by supporting sustainable and inclusive economic development. The responsibility to separate waste is determined by the EU Association Agreement and, based on the Waste Management Code of Georgia, is to be implemented in all municipalities starting in 2019.
The WMTR II program is implemented by CENN with the support of USAID.
