The mining industry is an important part and one of the main driving forces of the economy. It contributes to the infrastructural development of regions, creates employment and increases the possibilities for diversification of public revenues.

Mining can impact local communities both positively and negatively. While positive impacts such as employment and community development projects are important, they do not offset the potential negatives such as environmental consequences and health risks.

Mining can become more environmentally sustainable by developing and integrating practices that reduce the environmental impact of mining operations. But in order to develop and promote modern approaches and make the industry more sustainable, it is important to involve all the relevant stakeholders including policymakers, business sector, civic society and local communities.
